Budget apartment/hotel in Lyon Feb 27, 2016
Lyon tends to be somewhat on the expensive side for hotels, but if looking for something convenient and low cost, there are some places to be found. One such place is Montempo Apparthotel. As the name implies it is sort of an apartment/hotel which prices its rooms based on the length of your stay. It works something like this:

One to two persons, 1-4 nights, 49 euro

One to two persons, 5-14 nights, 39 euro

One to two persons, 15-28 nights, 35 euro

One to two persons, 29 nights minimum, 29 euro

The rooms are very basic, but clean enough and offer free wifi. While not very spacious, they are big enough for 2 persons with a single twin bed that has an additional slide out bed underneath. There is also a fully functional efficiency kitchen with sink, mini stove, microwave and refrigerator. Kitchenware supplied with pot, frypan, bowls, plates, glasses and utensils - basically everything you need to prepare some simple meals. A small table with a couple of chairs is provided in the room. There are laundry machines on site for a fee, and breakfast available for a fee also, but very basic. If you have a car, parking is available for 3 euro per 24 hrs.

The bathroom is small, but clean also, with stand in shower, sink and toilet. There is a small space heater in the bathroom also which warms it up quite nicely. All-in-all, for what you get here, the price is a real bargain in Lyon for travelers on a budget and the efficiency kitchen can save you extra if you like to make your own meal in the apartment. It's on the clean side too and not dingy/dirty like some cheapo budget hotels. The staff persons seem friendly enough and some English spoken.

Location wise it's in the 8th Arrondissement of Lyon, eastward of the Rhone & Saone River confluence. It's only a 15 minute ride by tram to Part Dieu main train station, from which one can get readily get around Lyon for sightseeing. The neighborhood is nothing spectacular, and lacking some charm, but it seems a quiet and safe place. No troubles in walking from the tram to the hotel at night, which takes about 5-10 minutes depending how fast you walk.

Check out their website for more info and booking rates - which is available in French and English. There are apparently some additional properties of the same type as this hotel in other French cities: Evry, Goussainville, Strausbourg and Marsielle. The first two are located near Paris. Montempo has plans in 2016 (as of this writing) to open two new establishments in Velizy (suburbs of Paris) and Toulouse. Seems like a small hotel brand to watch out for as they offer some good hotel solutions in apartment style rooms at very reasonable rates. The Montempo network is partners with Accueil Partenaires, which is a subsidiary of the Accor group

Otherwise make sure you find a hotel located along the unmanned metro - then strikes will not influence your visit too much. Lyon is lovely
