It is one of the main streets connecting the Croix-Rousse hill(Metro station Croix- Rousse° to the Terreaux district, centre of the city(Metro station Hotel de Ville).

This steep street more narrow in its lower part offers not only great VIEWS over the city and the surrounding mountains buT is also lined with RENAISSANCE HOUSES,and belongs to the territory classified as World Heritage Site by UNESCO.

Used since prehistoric times by animals and people, formerly a path in the Middle Ages bordered with agricultural land including vineyards,it was urbanized in the XVI with one or two storeys houses(farmer houses, then trader houses, shops and ...cafés) and it was so dangerously steep that in the XVIII ,the street was barred by standing stones(PIERRES PLANTEES) to prevent horsedrawn transport from using it,from where the name of the upper section of the street.

The upper part has been completely re-developed in the last decades:one can see the large ESPLANADE DE LA GRANDE COTE opened up by the demolition of all the houses with lovely gardens(different exotic trees to pay tribute to silk and paper) and stairs below.
