Montauk Lighthouse Jul 22, 2008
now this here light is at the end of the south fork of long island, known as "montauk, the end" its right on the edge of land. this light was the 1st lighthouse in new york state and is the 4th oldest active lighthouse in the united states. strategically located on the tip of the south fork's new york peninsula it has been used as an army, navy, coast guard and air force base.
construction started on the light under President George Washington in june 7,1796 and completed nov 5,1796. the lighthouse was next to camp Hero during WW1 and WW2. it was heavily fortified with big guns and the gun emplacements and concret bunkers are still visible today. the tower stands 110'6" the current light, equivalant to 2,500,000 candle power flashes every 5 seconds and can be seen 18 miles. pirate Captain Kidd was said to have burired treasure at the foot of the lighthouse and 1699 at two ponds, now known as money ponds.
