Monroe Overview

Monroe exhibits the classic definition of small town with a small town feel. It is kept active and pulled along into real time by two things; the local university, and it being the corporate headquarters of a communications giant. It also was the birthplace for one of the top U.S. Airlines, but now any signs of that are long gone. It is southern so you experience that southern hospitality and charm. In a few locations you can also experience the real flavor of Cajun cooking that is so prevalent as you go further south.

The city has felt the economic trials of both Louisiana and the world over the past few years, but now is emerging into a growth and restoration phase; building is resuming, the downtown area is being re-vitalized, businesses that closed are now opening again, and unemployment is slowly decreasing, not unlike many area southern towns. Housing and cost of living prices are lower than in most other areas of the contiguous US, and in that respect living (and visiting) the area can be quite a bargain.
