Monesterio de San Catalina Arequipa Reviews
Monesterio de San Catalina May 15, 2013
I had read from my guide books that the Monesterio de San Catalina was the must do place to visit in Arequipa. And the books were not wrong.
Though to call it a monastery is somewhat of a misnomer. Firstly it was founded as a female religious order. And secondly because it is so vast; it is more a citadel within the town than a convent. It comprises six streets, three cloisters, a church and a gallery full of superb paintings.
The place is beautiful, full of colour and like walking into a postcard. I especially liked the novices' courtyard with it spanish orange trees in fruit and the little cobbles streets full of flowering geraniums.
My friend and I wandered for a couple of hours here, cameras in hand, taking picture after picture. It truly was a delight.
The entrance fee of 35sols (roughly £9/$14) is steep, especially by local standards, but well worth the expenditure
