SAINT NAUM MONASTERY Feb 19, 2017
May 2011

Situated along Lake Ohrid, 29 km (18 miles) south of Ohrid, the MONASTERY OF SAINT NAUM is an eastern Orthodox Monastery, named after the medieval Saint Naum who founded it in the year 905. Saint Naum was buried in the church in 910.

Saint Naum is one of the most beautiful monasteries in Macedonia and an important pilgrimage place. The monastery was included in our VT tour "Lazy Drive to Ohrid via Prespa Lake". It was quite late in the evening when we got there and it rained most of the time we were there. But it still couldn't deter us from appreciating this truly beautiful monastery.

The present day church was built in the 16th century. Of the original church, just the side chapel with the grave of St. Naum, still stands.

Frescoes were painted in 1806. The side chapel frescoes depict the life and miracles of St. Naum.

Near the monastery, there is a small separate chapel.

Around the church grounds, you will see many peacocks. The noise that came from those birds was unbelievable.

After our tour, our group had a small dinner at Ostrovo Restaurant which is part of the Monastery complex.

Worthy day trip from Ohrid Jun 19, 2016
The Monastery of Saint Naum is a beautiful monastery near the Albanian border, across the lake from Ohrid. While I was there, I was wondering if it would be worth the time and money to get there, given the nice churches already available in Ohrid. The answer is a resounding yes! It's much bigger and more significant than the churches in Ohrid, and with a prettier backdrop.

It's a monastery, church, and final resting place for the saint, and you'll find a large outer wall surrounding the small, inner church. If you go inside the church, you can see stunning frescoes on the walls and ceilings. No photos allowed, but take my word for it (or Google image search), they're beautiful! You can even press your ear against the tomb of the saint, and local legend says you can hear his heartbeat.

When you're finished admiring the monastery, there's more to see outside. It's sandwiched between Lake Ohrid and Galichica National Park, so views and nature abound. You can pay a couple hundred dinars to take a guided boat through the waters of the park. Whatever you do, don't eat at the uninspired restaurant inside the monastery walls. It's overpriced and the food is ordinary. Just walk a little bit further along the water's edge and you'll find Restaurant Island. It's a wee bit fancy, but the food and drink are amazing, the view of the national park is so beautiful, and the restaurant is floating for heaven's sake! Even being fancy, it's fairly-priced. I've paid much higher for food that wasn't half as good.

To get to Sveti Naum and the national park, there are frequent ferries that run from Ohrid town. It should cost 500 dinars (about 10 USD) and you'll probably make a couple of stops along the way. The view on the way over is breathtaking, especially if you catch the sunset coming back. The water is a rich, clear teal and you can see fish swimming a few meters deep. The lake is surrounded by mountains and watching the clouds roll over and change colors will make your trip.

An inspiring place with tourist alert Aug 29, 2015
The monastery of Saint Naum is on the south side of the Ohrid Lake near the Macedonian/Albanian border. In the monastery you can find the tomb of Saint Naum. The little church on top of the a little hill is a piece of great architecture and smaller as we thought it would be. Before you enter the monastery you have the opportunity to light a candle but that takes some time because all the Macedonian people do this. In the church/Monastery you will find some great fresco's. The legend goes that if you lay your ear on the coffin you hear the heart of Saint Naum still beat. I have to disappoint you all, i heard nothing. Respect the local habits and leave each room backwords. Just outside the Monastery you will have a great view over the Ohrid Lake. The best time to visit this place is early in the morning because in the afternoon the tourist will take over this place, unfortunately the will do this with a lack of respect.
