Momoiwa-sõ YH Rebun Reviews
This can only happen in Japan Aug 08, 2008
Preparing for this review, I checked out some other writers. Someone wrote "There is nothing in the world that can prepare you for what a stay at Momoiwaso is like.", that much is true. But I will try it anyway.
The outward appearance of the hostel is probably best described as 'Shack on the side of the ocean'. On the inside though it is well kept, clean and in good state. There is a male and female dorm available, there are no walls between beds and the male dorm is above the lobby.
As the lights go off at 10 PM, this is not really a problem - everyone goes to sleep at the same time. The hostel provides breakfast and dinner at an extra cost. I asked for a non-seafood diet and every night and morning there was a special meal tray set aside for me without seafood. One day they prepared a lunch box for a major hike, and even then did they take my meal preference into account.
The beds are normal bunk beds, the bathroom is communal (but not co-ed) as is common in Japan. The (male) bathroom capacity is about 8 persons, which is enough for the amount of beds available (about 30 male dorm beds).
At night there is entertainment by the staff, which is unfortunately exclusively available in Japanese. Whenever something happens, the staff will energetically respond to it. Expect enthusiastic responses to: 'new guests arrive', 'the sun sets', 'breakfast' and many more.
Besides entertainment in the hostel itself, the hostel also provides transport to the start of the '8 hour hike of love and friendship' (as it was translated for me). If you choose to partake in this hike, you'll be woken up early for breakfast and take a bus to the northernmost tip of the island from where you'll walk back to the hostel.
While staying here, you're completely out of touch with the outside world. There is no internet, wifi, or other buildings within a 2 km radius. The good thing about this is the lack of light pollution, great for stargazing.
I had an absolutely amazing stay in this hostel, I can only say it was an experience. I recommend you check it out for yourself if you're in the area.
