Mombasa is a city built on an island (Mombasa Island).It was founded by Arabs in the 11. century. The city is the only major seaport in Kenya and also the nation's second largest city with more than 700.000 inhabitants. The port is the most important of East-Africa. Mombasa has been under the rule of many Arab and Western countries. It has been ruled by Oman, Zanaibar, Portugal, England and by African tribes.
As the capital of the Coast Province, Mombasa is not only an important economic center, but also the hot spot of major tourist operations between the inland safari destinations and the coast beach resorts.
When visiting Mombasa you have to see Fort Jesus, built by the Portuguese in 1593, the old town around Fort Jesus along with the oldest Mosque of the region and the old harbour, Moi Avenue with the famous Tusks and the astonishing South Mombasa ferry System, connecting the city with the Southern Coast region. At the rich markets of the city you can by all kind of spices and herbs.
