Molly's Stardust Motel Duncannon Reviews
Cosmic accomodations? Dec 10, 2011
Made the annual pilgrimage to visit my mother before Thanksgiving and stayed one more night at the Stardust. I’ve been holing up here for years as it is dirt cheap and the closest digs to Mom’s place. She lives in a former dentist office and as you might imagine, there isn’t much space for guests.
The Stardust is located on 11-15, a busy trucking route along the Susquehanna just north of Harrisburg (on the opposite side of the river) and I am always amazed by the brisk occupancy. Certainly nothing fancy, but the lack of facilities is cost justified and despite this being a remote stretch it seems to attract a fair business. You do get an abundance of square footage in your room and everything is clean, so the basics are covered. But you can forget any extras, like wi-fi or even a coke machine on the premises. There is a good diner a couple hundred yards south (the Ranch House) and a convenience store a little over a mile north to satisfy any needs missing on campus.
The furniture is delightfully tacky and I always laugh at the paper shower mats provided in the bathroom – I keep expecting them to vanish but year after year they persist. To be honest my sole complaint is that there always seem to be a few house flies flitting around. Not many, but it is perplexing to endure these pests so late in the season and I always need to avail myself of the handy fly swatter hanging from the wall to rid myself of these buggers. Makes me wonder whether it is worse in the summer, but in all honesty they aren’t too bothersome – it is more being aware of their presence than anything else.
Whoever is manning the office always seems to be quite accommodating, but please bear in mind this is a low budget operation and the office doesn’t operate around the clock. In fact, one of the few times I did drop by the office there was a sign up indicating the manager was out cleaning rooms! While I doubt too many folks will be seeking a place to stay in this neck of the woods, the Stardust is a sentimental favorite with enough character to overcome the obvious shortcomings.
