The Mogollon Rim is the most important geological feature in Arizona. If not for the Mogollon Rim there would be no Grand Canyon. When the Colorado Plateau rose up it split Arizona into two halves, North and South. The Mogollon Rim was the southern edge of the Colorado Plateau. If the Colorado Plateau split quickly the Colorado would have found a different direction to flow, changing everything in Arizona. The Colorado Plateau rose slow enough to give the Colorado River time to eat its way through soft and hard layers of rock on its current corse.
My current camp was in the Sitgreaves N.F. at a nice overlook on F.S. 300. Most of the rim is 1000 feet above the lower section that didnt rise up. There are not that many good scenic overlooks that give you a good camp with a great overlook. There is a good tall forest of Ponderosa Pine there to keep you in the shade.
I think the Forest Serviced banned camping on the scenic overlooks cuz few people got to view the great overlooks. Thats OK with me cuz the Sitgreaves N. F. has great free backcountry camping near and far from the Mogollon Rim. My favorite all time scenic overlook of the Mogollon Rim is Schnebly Hill Vista.
