Is There a Real Restroom in this Place??? Sep 10, 2009
Eating at the Modern Toilet is probably more like visiting an attraction than it is dining out! At least that’s how I felt in the beginning when Brett and Erin brought me here. I had heard about this place through the forums, and also knew that it had been featured on the Travel Channel. The novelty of it certainly brings people in!
As soon as I entered I almost had to laugh! Everything and I mean EVERYTHING correlated to your typical bathroom: from the glass-top tables that rested on sinks and the specially designed dishes, to the toilet seats that you sat on and the toilet paper dispensers on the wall. Food is served in a variety of dishes, including squatters, toilets, tubs, and sinks. And the drinks are served in urinals! I was so preoccupied with the ambience of this place; I don’t even remember what food I ordered. But I do remember that I liked it! And I do remember that I ordered a side dish of cheese sticks that were served in a miniature squatter. To top off the meal, we had a huge dessert of shaved ice that we shared and their famous portion of ice cream that looks like, of course, a pile of poop! Haha |

Modern Toilet Restaurant - Unique experience Nov 19, 2009
I have heard about this restaurant before we visited Taiwan and after reading a review written by our fellow Travbuddy, I decided to visit this very unique bathroom theme restaurant. I told Charlie about my idea but he was reluctant to try it because he thought it would be disgusting and unpleasant to sit in a bathroom environment for meals. Of course, I always win and he finally gave in ;)
One day when we have done with our hiking on our way back from the metro to our hotel, we came across this restaurant. It is located on the same street as our hotel (along Wenlin Road where the Shilin night market located). This is so convenient! Apparently there are at least 4 of these Modern Toilet Restaurant around Taiwan. It was the day where we took a day off from hiking. We decided to check this out. Upon entering Modern Toilet Restaurant, you will see there is a huge teddy bear sitting on a toilet bow and a big shower head on top of her. So cute! Inside of the restaurant, are tables and chairs of course but table is a water sink cover with glass and seats are the covered toilet bows! Instead of the ordinary napkins dispenser on the table, there are toilet rolls attached to the wall so if you need to wipe your mouth (or ass) just pull it from the roll and that’s your napkins! After admiring the weird environment, is time to order. The menu is normal (thank God) and the meals are consisting of Asian and Western styles. The English menu is in its normal name like Curry Chicken Rice however if you can read Chinese, the name is related to Poops or Pees and it is pretty discussing! Instead of a star next to the meal indicating “chef recommend” but it is a poop! We ordered one Curry Chicken Rice, one Thai Coconut Rice, 2 drinks and a shaved ice for dessert. Viola! Our meal came! Our drink is served in a Urinal and our rice is served in a Toilet Bowl!! If you pay a little more, you can bring your urinal home! Luckily they still give us the ordinary folk and spoon instead of some other crazy things; I will never want to eat with my hand! The rice was good although Charlie out-ordered me again! The drinks and shaved ice were so huge that we could not finish them. I made a statement that made Charlie laugh – Now, where is the real toilet where I can pee? They have an ordinary toilet and nothing funny about it. The friendly waiter came to collect our toilet bowls (plates) and presented us a free ice cream dessert, of course, served in a squatter and the ice cream is in a form of poop..The ice cream was surprisingly good though. The price was a little high but the food is good. The “Toilet” I meant restaurant is clean and no stinky smell, therefore it’s a pretty good experience. I would certainly recommend people to give it a try if he wants to try something new and unique! |

Toilet restaurant.
Modern Toilet is definitely unique! You sit on real toilets, eat out of miniature size toilets, squatters, sinks and drink out of urinals. My favorite part of this place was the toilet paper dispensers on the wall that you used for napkins… Day 4: Temples, Shrines, and Toilets! |

We decided to check out an interesting place for dinner - it's called Modern Toilet. Your drinks are served in urinals, your food in toilet bowls...Awwww yeah! Very interesting concept and apparently one that has taken off quite well as they've opened several different restaurants just around Taipei. The concept got rave reviews but so did the food… Dinner and a Toilet |

Dinner at the 'Modern Toilet' restaurant in the Shilin area proved that theme restaurants can be as wacky and outrageous as they need to be, and I quickly deduced that nobody with money in their pocket would starve in Taiwan due to the omnipresence of food (stalls and restaurants… A pleasure-filled getaway 'made in Taiwan' |
