Mocanita Vaser Valley Steam Train Viseu de Sus Reviews
Very adventurous ride with unspoiled view Aug 26, 2010
The place is unique, this being unspoiled forested mountain in the north of Romania, at the border with Ukraine. As you go higher into the mountain, the scenery closes down on you and, depending on the hour, it can be a glorious forested river valley, or a movie-like nightly wild experience.
The railway is run by a timber company, which does tourist services on the side - and it shows. They assume no responsibility for your safety. If you feel that a wild trip on an old small-gauge rail track, still used for logging, in open-platform wagons is not up to you - do not go! I for one experienced a derailment, which produced no major injuries, but it was no fun either. For others it turned into a nightmare scare.
Pack warm clothes - it gets very cold up the mountain. If you feel really adventurous, organise your trip in advance with a travel agency. They can book refuges and logging cabins up in the mountains. There aren't reliably marked paths in the forests, therefore a local expert guide would be very useful. For moderate adrenaline just take the around 5-6 hours ride to and from the Paltin station with the steam train.
There is a small cafe-bar at the departure station. Bring your own provisions for something better.
Warnings: 1) SAFETY FIRST. Read above and make your own inquiries at the station;
2) SCHEDULES VARY. Visit the website for schedules [mostly in Summer] and occasional special trains.
