Miyajima Island Reviews
Very nice island to visit Jul 22, 2000
From Hiroshima, it's easy to reach to Miyajima Island. 2 ferry lines have ferry services to this island on a daily basis, but don't forget to check when the last ferry leaves the island for the main land.
The ferry costs 170 yen (around 1,50 euor or around 2 US dollars) each way and for Japanese Railpass holders, the ferry crossing is free with JR Ferries.
On the island itself you have several options of what you can do. There are several walking courses. There are various temples and shrines that you can visit, including the (floating) Itsukushima Shrine with its (floating) Itsukushima Torii.
Other places to visit are the Marine Plaza Miyajima, an aquarium, a visit to Mount Misen or some of the parks that lay on the islands.
During my first visit in 2000, I visit the Itsukushima Shrine and the Marine Plaza Miyajima. On my second visit in 2007, I went to the top of Mount Misen, taking the cable car. The top is also reachable by foot.
If you have enough time, do visit Mount Misen and the shrine. The aquarium is nice, but not a must see in my opinion. I set the costs at average, because it depends on what you want to do and what you're willing to pay for.
Be aware of the wild deer walking around, they're not scared of humans and will try to steal what they think is food - maps, food wrapped in plastic, paper.
Part of the list What to see and do in Japan
