Missionaries of Charity
Missionaries of Charity Kolkata Reviews
Unforgettable Feb 19, 2013
The Missionaries of Charity is notorious as the charity that was founded by Mother Teresa in Kolkata. Her humanitarian work is renowned throughout the world and she is a real legend within Kolkata too (one of the major streets is even now named after her). The organisation has several branches throughout the city. There is Mother House on AJC Bose Road, which is where the Mother’s final resting place is and seems to serve as the control centre for the sisters. There are other centres such as Kali Ghat (which serves the terminally ill), Prem Dan (looks after male patients) and Daya Dan (looks after children). For many visitors, Mother House is the key stop.
If you wish to volunteer, you would need to come here to register (such meetings take place Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays). However, even if you wish to volunteer for just 1 day, it is possible to turn up very early in the morning and secure a day pass. If you wish to stay longer than 1 day, you’d get day passes until the next available registration day comes up. No specialist experience or skills are required, and your religious affiliations are not an issue. The day starts at dawn at mass (voluntary to attend), a quick meeting and breakfast (around 7am), and then off to the volunteer branch you have been assigned to (so you are there around 9am). Volunteering can take place during mornings and afternoons, and during my 2 weeks there, I saw people volunteering from 1-2 days up to several months. A very worthwhile experience.
For Mother House, visitors are allowed. You are permitted to visit the final resting place of Mother Teresa, attend mass and visit the short museum inside. There is a very nice selection of pictures and quotes here, and it is hard not to be moved. You can also take a look at Mother Teresa’s room, to get a poignant feel of how she lived and managed her operations from such a humble little place.
Whether you are a volunteer or just a visitor, I am sure that a visit to this organisation will be memorable.
