Fond Memories May 11, 2009
I am really surprised that no locals have written about Mission Beach but I know I have some great memories going here as a kid. I am more familiar of the Belmont Park area so most of my memories come from there. Of course there is an old wooden roller coaster there the "Giant Dipper" although you want to go on it for the nostalgia, it is painful. There are a few carnival type rides right in Belmont Park and shops such as Wings which has touristy gifts and clothing. There are some fun restaurants, such as Cane's where you can sit on their rooftop deck and a newly renovated bar just across the street called the Coaster Saloon is so awesome and a fun place to hang out. Hamels is a cool store to go to for sure and a local favorite bar is called the Pennant. If you go there just ask someone where it is, they will always be aware of it's location! When on the beach keep in mind that one side is for walking and the other for bikes/jogging..they will not hesitate to run you over. =) My dog was almost a victim of a a beach rundown. There are also a lot of fun things to do: bike rentals, parasailing, picnics on the beach, long walks on the beach (haha), trying to watch for the Green Flash (there is also a restaurant called the Green Flash along Mission Beach), sport fishing and of course Sea World is very close by. There's nothing like spending the summer on Mission Beach, nice locals and college students always having a smile on their face, how could they not? Good times in San Diego all around, I HIGHLY suggest it!
An early Sunday morning..

Putting up a beach cottage in Mission Beach with family. Its actually quite cool (as in nice). Much better than a hotel. Lots of room, freedom to move around, the beach at your doorstep, costs less when you tote up the charges for a full week with family… Week In San Diego - Day 1 - Mission Beach

My kids decided that they would like to go to Sea World, so I searched for family friendly hotels in San Diego near Mission Beach and Sea World. We also decided that we would include 2 days at Legoland ( special from AAA , buy 1 day pass, get 2nd day free), and wanted to stay closer to the park, as driving between Mission Beach and Carlsbad seemed onerous. Triangulating… Finding places to stay

Gaslamp Quarter or Mission Beach. All hotels near the San Diego Convention Center are sold out. Seems if you want to spend July 2008 in San Diego, you need to plan for it in July 2007... Which I didn't. So I'll have to make do with… Drafting San Diego

Since I live in Las Vegas, I see plenty of sand but not enough ocean to make all that sand a beach. I had never been to Mission Beach before and at that point I didn't really care what beach it was as long as it was some sort of a beach. Since it was earlier in the day and the beginning of August there… At least SOME beach time...

I had to check out the other beaches today, so I joined with fellow travbuddy Elise again and we met up at Mission Beach this time. And this is what I called real californian action beach: fun fair, long stretch of sand, skaters, cyclers, bbq, beer, music... hell, never saw such a thing… Seconds!
