Minnehaha Falls and Park Jun 19, 2011
Minnehaha Falls Park is a large park with historical buildings, picnic grounds, a restaurant, bandshell, bike rentals, and of course, a waterfall!
The park is in Minneapolis and can be crazy on beautiful summer days and holidays. Parking is available in pay lots at the park, or for free on the streets a couple blocks away. You can also ride the light rail and get off at the stop right at the park! The park has a very large, tree covered picnic area with a couple of shelters and a bandshell. There is a playground, volleyball court, walking paths and restrooms.
Minnehaha Creek flows through Minneapolis and tumbles over a 50 ft waterfall near the creek's confluence with the Mississippi River, not far from St. Anthony Falls. We had a very wet spring/summer, so the falls were gushing water. The waterfall often dries up in late summer/fall and is frozen in winter. There is a footbridge over the top of the waterfall, and steps down to the river below the falls on both sides of the stream. A little bit downstream, the creek widens into a shallow area (man-made) that is perfect for splashing around in. There were lots of people cooling off in the stream that day.
The park offers bike rentals and has paved trails just for bikes. There are some historical buildings on site, including the old train depot that used to bring tourists to the waterfall. The historic Stevens House, which is the supposedly the first wooden house west of the Mississippii River, was relocated to the park for preservation. The park also contains some sculptures, statues, and gardens.
By far, the highlight of the park is the waterfall. It is best to come during the week and not on a holiday. Its a great way to spend a couple of hours or an entire day.
