Milledgeville, Georgia is the former Capital of Georgia, serving as the Antebellum Capital from 1803 to 1868. Adjacent to the Georgia College and State University in Milledgeville is the former Govenor's Mansion built in 1831 which has undergone a multi-million dollar rennovation in 2000-2004. Georgia Military College established in 1879 has a few remainng historic buildings, including the Old Georgia Capital building, on this junior college campus--one of only five United States Military Junior Colleges in the country.

Milledgeville is near the geographic center of the State of Georgia and about 2 hours south of Atlanta. A very large resevior, Lake Sinclair, dominates the surrounding area and is a great place for water activities such as fishing, jetskiing and waterskiing. There is also a little river caleed "Little River' that runs through town.

The old town square area which has been rennovated in recent years. The Mens State Prison and Central State Hospital, as well as several light industrial and manufacturing enterprises employ the majority of the estimated population of 19,761 (2006).

A 9,000-pound, 17-foot-tall marble peace monument erected by the Rotary Club International of Milledgeville outside the Courthouse on 18 July 1996 commemorates the designation of Milledgeville as the first Rotary Peace Community in the United States.
