Military History Museum Oct 04, 2017
The Heeresgeschichtliches Museum (Museum of Military History) shows the history of the Habsburg empire from the late 16th century until 1918 and Austria's difficult years after the dissolution of the monarchy until 1945. The area now called Arsenal was built from 1848 on a military complex with a weapon factory and a weapon depot, but above all as barracks.

The museum was built by the architects Ludwig Foerster and Theophil Hansen from 1850 to 1856 as representativ building, in a style mix of Byzantine, Hispano-Moorish and Neo-Gothic, it was called then the k.k.Hof-Waffenmuseum, was the first museum in Vienna.

Opening hours:

Every day from 9 am to 5 pm

Entrace fee € 6

Closest bus stop is Arsenal with bus 69A.

The adresse is Arsenal, Objekt 18 (Arsenal, Objekt 1 on their website is the office, but you can walk through this building to the museum entrance), and at Arsenal, Objekt 13 is the Panzerhalle showing several tanks.

Big Museum with Cool Military Stuff Nov 03, 2014
The Military Museum is just outside of Vienna City Center, with a 15 minute train ride and 5 minute walk.

The museum website makes the museum look quite small but it was alot bigger than I expected. Infact I might have even missed a few rooms as it was so big.

I think its still a fun place even if your not into miltary stuff (which im not).Theres alot of cool and historic weaponry and theres plenty of great photo opportunities to be had with tanks, guns and Nazi outfits.

This place is probably not on alot of peoples lists of things to do whilst in Vienna but Id definitely recommend paying a visit.

Trip into central European military history in a wonderful building Apr 23, 2011
Trip into central European military history in a wonderful building - even if you are not interested in military history, you should go and enjoy the architecture.

It was built in the 1850ies in an interesting moorish-byzantine style.

In the main hall upstairs (with the huge cupola)you will find paintings of the most important Austrian (austro-hungarian) battles. This is where the Austrian General Staff Officers get promoted by the President.

It's a classic museum (there is no fancy interactive stuff) with an extremely famous exhibit: the car in which Franz Ferdinand died - this triggered the First World War.

The tanks and armoured vehicles in the back can only be seen in summer.
