Milford Sound Cruise with Southern Discovery Tours Jun 14, 2015
If you're looking to take a cruise in Milford Sound I highly recommend Southern Discoveries:

I did their "Discover More Cruise" on June 12, 2015. The cost was $159NZD (~$112 USD as of this review) which included hotel pickup from Te Anau, bus tour and stops along the way, cruise, complimentary tea/coffee/milk/water on the cruise, a delicious lunch, underground water observatory visit, and return to Te Anau and dropoff at hotel.

I was not able to drive into the Milford Sound area on my own from Te Anau because there is an inspection station that was checking to see if your car has snow chains. My only option was to book a tour and I'm glad I did it with Southern Discoveries.

Along the way to Milford Sound you stop at several neat attractions.

The cruise takes about an hour. On board you are provided complimentary drinks and lunch box. The cruise takes you near waterfalls and you're provided rain jackets if you want to stay outside. There were seals sleeping on rocks and our cruise ship went as close as possible for us to take pictures. The guides are always on the lookout for interesting things to see so you won't miss anything.

After the cruise they dropped us off at the underwater observatory where you're able to walk down about 30 meters underwater. There are many interesting specimens to see including black coral. After about an hour in the observatory another boat picks up you to take you back.

Simply Unbelievable Sep 27, 2012
I had this impression that Milford sound was going to be disappointing because it was so hyped about, but boy oh boy was I wrong. We were simply breathless, this place is stunning and the day we went was beautiful. My recommendation however would to be go with a small ferry. There big ferries that could seat hundreds of people but we chose to go with Mitre Peak Cruises on a boat with maybe 30+ people on it, at the time it was about the same prices as the bigger boats but the bigger boats could be a bit more expensive because they had a meal option. The small boat was a much more intimate setting. My partner had a coffee cup and tried to fill it with water from one of the many little waterfalls - the captain told him to put it on the bow of the boat, and filled it for him. There is floating Aquarium that you can stop off at for an extra price, but I am not entirely sure it was worth it,in the sense that some people that went with us thought it was boring.I personally found it really interesting how the fresh water and saltwater interacted and created an enviroment for fish and coral that you would not normally see with out doing a fairly deep scuba dive. If you're not into that kind of thing you probably wouldn't find it spectacular. If you love fish or nature or science then the aquarium has a really interesting exhibit and you get to walk down into underwater chamber to see the fis and the rare coral, that you're very unlikely to see anywhere else.

A Unique & Beautiful Treat May 09, 2011
Initially I thought that this is a bit hyped location but overall, it was an enjoyable experience. The drive from Queenstown is 4 to 5 hours and if you want to go to Milford Sound & come back to Queenstown in a day, it's a bit tough thing. We started very early (around 4.30 am) and reached at around 10 am. The views on the way are just amazing. Open fields, mountains & patches of jungle makes the journey enjoyable. The location is like a huge lake and if the weather is good, you will see beautiful scenes. The boat rides are a must and are a bit expensive. It is better to go there in a group or group-tours. If you are driving yourself, remember that there is a petrol pump at the milford sounds but it runs only on credit card. It will be better if you fill up the tank. In my opinion, it is better to take a break in journey at Te Anau in the night and then proceed to milford sounds.

The Boat Trip through Milford Sound May 15, 2009
All I can say about that boat trip is that it´s definately my favourite attractions when it comes to experience New Zealand. Not only its stunning scenery but also the way you get to experience it while being on the ferry really made my day!

Theres nothing left out...from tiny watersplashes, that drizzle softly onto your face, while the boat passes the giant rocks, to watching seals lying on rocks literary 10 meters away from you!

The boat trip takes about an hour and a half but is definately worth the 45 NZ $.

I´ve honestly never seen sothing as beautiful as this!

My advice:

If you ever go to New Zealand you shouldn´t miss out on its most stunning and beautiful attraction!

I hope you´ll enjoy it as much as I did!

The Most Beautiful Place In The World Mar 27, 2008
Wow, and you thought Lord Of The Rings was stage set, this is the most spectacular breath taking views of pristine Alpine Slopes into a Fjord (It Was incorrectly named a sound) with cascading waterfalls, jumping dolphins and as my older daughter described it ... "Dad there is only so much beautiful that one can take in"

The boat trip is essential to see wonders and delights not seen from the shore. And the Fire Fly Trail at the hostel was great, as were all the hidden waterfalls. My biggest regret is not taking a big ass camera. And I will take it for my next trip in 2010.

We hired a car and stayed at the hostel and it was quite an adventure and experience, and most definately economical. Our base was Queenstown in the area and an awesome little City bordering on a massive lake and the Remarkable mountain range, which we loved too (definately my favourite in New Zealand)Definately the Gondola is a must with great food and awesome views.

Amazing sights - Well worth a visit Jun 25, 2008
When my friend first suggested that we go to Milford Sound, I was not sure that I would enjoy it, as I fprefer to do things rather than look at pretty things...

Anyway, I decided to go anyway, and I am so glad that I did. Driving to the Fjord through the Fjordland National Park was amazing. The mountains are incredible, and there are loads of things to look at on the way, waterfalls, grassy plains, glaciers, mountains, rivers and they are all incredibly beautiful.

Milford Sound itself is amazing. The way that the mountain faces are so sheer, coming down into the water... The waterfalls are incredible, and there is always the chance of seeing wild dolphins which is a sight in itself.

A not to be missed place when travelling New Zealand.

Fantastic! Nov 03, 2007
If you want to see some great scenery then going to Milford Sound is a must.

Milford Sound is a fjord where the cruise ships come into to see the scenery.

They can't dock there but what a view.

Of course if you go to Milford Sound, there are 2 hour cruises which are great.

You get all the information about the area and the scenery is fantastic.

There are a couple of the cruises that are an overnight deal. Didn't do it but that would be nice.

To get to Milford sound you can drive in. There is only one way in and out. Of course there is also a bus trip that takes you in and then you go on the cruise before heading back out on the bus. It is a very long day if you take these options.

The option that we took was to fly in, we then took a short walk and got onto one of the cruises and were then picked up and taken back to the plane which flew us back to Queenstown.

A bit expensive but the views of the Alps and the fjords and glaciers were worth it. We were back in Queenstown by lunch time and that gave us time to do other things.

This was the longest day of my life!! Didn't realise that the journey there was actually 4 hours, I didn't check stupid I know. Well the weather was bad and the journey there was just over 6 hours (avalanche on road, had to wait for it to clear). We finally got there, got hearded onto the boat and set off on the cruise. It rained ridculously hard to the point no one wanted to go outside to take pictures and the cloud cover was such that the visibility even without the rain was poor. They also advertise this as lunch included. Check what they are offering. On our trip it turned out to be a baguette and since everywhere was closed on the journey back, by the time we got back to Queenstown (around 8pm) everyones' stomachs thought their throats had been cut.

Top tips, try and check the forecast before you book this trip as it can be a nightmare in bad weather and bring snacks, lots of snacks!!
