Great upscale Southern cuisine just oustide of the French Quarter Nov 07, 2009
MiLa is the collaboration of a husband and wife team that hails from Mississippi and Louisiana. They serve sophisticated modern fare with hints of traditional southern cuisine. This slick restaurant is located in the posh Renaissance Pere Marquette just south of Canal Street on the corner of Bourbon and Common. While it is a quiet locale away from the hustle of the French Quarter portion of Bourbon Street, you can see all kinds of revelers walking in for a night on the town if you sit at window table. The amuse bouche was actually like three of them as a trio of bite size delicacies were sent in from the kitchen. The best part of my meal was my appetizer, sweetbreads with truffle grits. The sweetbreads were prepared perfectly and though the dish was heavy for an appetizer, it was well worth it. My entree was a sweet tea brined duck with wilted spinach and roasted beets. The duck was tasty, but lacking in good crispy skin. For dessert, we split a deconstructed "root beer float", which was not only delicious but absolutely nailed the flavors in an unconventional way. My one criticism would be that they do not have signature cocktails. That just doesn't seem right to me in the cocktail capitol of the country.
