Decent sight-seeing time-killer Jul 03, 2017
Mikasa Park is located near Naval Base Yokosuka in Yokosuka, Japan. It is a worthwhile attraction if you have time to spend observing Japan's military history or just want to stroll through the park. I decided to peruse through the area during a hot day waiting for a restaurant to open.

The park hosts the decommissioned Battleship Mikasa, which was a pre-dreadnought battleship built by the Imperial Japanese Navy during the late 1890's and now functions as a museum. Mikasa Park is regarded as one of Japan's top 100 parks and I see the reason why it is regarded as such. There are some gift shops near the entrance. The park is a nicely decorated open expanse, where one can relax, that's if the weather conditions a right. While the park is free to enter, there is a small fee to access the battleship, around 600 yen. There is an open auditorium to where the park can host concerts as well.

It has a nice fountain where visitors can observe and it apparently projects multicolored lights at night. I did get a little fatigued going through it, with the lack of shade on a July Monday. There are some friendly Japanese vending machines populating the facilities within the park to quench your thirst. While adjacent to the naval base, getting to Mikasa Park seems a little bit of a reach for pedestrians. Parking is limited too.

Mikasa Park is a decent sight-seeing time-waster. It might be one of Yokosuka's best kept secrets. It has good things going for it visually, but other than Battleship Mikasa I didn't see much else. There is a ferry connection to Sarushima (also known as Monkey Island), which I will visit in the near future. Overall, a recommendation only if you have time to burn.
