Personal Experience Apr 25, 2011
Well in the 60s/70s Afghan (by all accounts) was a pretty civilised placed to go and seemed fairly Westernised almost (Kabul etc), these days though thats all changed, from my personal experience of Afghan, it wouldnt be top of my recommendation list unless you go well tooled up and dont mind getting into a bit of a scrap. The majority of people who live there dont seem to mind you being there, especially if you are giving them stuff then they seem friendly, there are however the minority who dont want you there and they make it there mission to personally get rid of you in whatever way possible they can: IEDs, Mines, Shootings etc. Suicide bombings are a particular favourite around the Kabul area.
All that being said if the minority were to stop being so one sided thinking, then i reckon this country could once again return to what was once a half decent place to visit, all this is just based on my personal experience though, so dont just take my word for it, join the forces and get a free visit to the country or if your feeling particularly adventurous, then buy yourself a plane ticket, some armour a bit of protection and go have a whale of a time, the weather can be pretty mixed over the year but when its hot its very hot so take your sun cream and drink plenty of water! im just coming to the end of my holiday over here and to be honest i cant wait to go back home, been here a few times now and it doesnt get any better.
