Microtel Inn Palawan Puerto Princesa City Reviews
Nice view but very noisy Mar 21, 2010
There is a perfect word that describes Microtel Puerto Prinsesa in Filipino language - Sayang.
It means, it is regrettable or "it would have been nice but..." or "oh, what a waste..."
Why? Because this hotel had a nice beach front view (but not for swimming, more like a mangrove swamp) and would have had a nice interior design but was an architectural and management disaster. You don't need to be an architect to know that a hotel houses guests that would want to have peace and quiet while in their room. The thing is, their rooms on the ground floor doesn't have any type of sound proofing at all.
So forget about having a good sleep nor even a relaxing time in your room. You can hear everything, especially when there are inconsiderate, loud guests who don't care about other people and would talk like they are in a decibel contest. It also doesn't help that the reception area is just a few steps away to the ground floor rooms and usually guests check in/out in big groups. Heavy doors are also constantly banging because of the blowing wind.
The lack of soundproofing also extends to their breakfast hall. Yes, hall is the appropriate word for their "restaurant" because it feels almost like a cafeteria ambiance. The breakfast selection is also very limited and even in "assisted buffet" (meaning, the staff would serve the food on your plate to regulate the flow)
Oh yeah, the soundproofing is not only the problem in the room but the cleanliness too. I don't understand their way of cleaning a room, they mop the floor wet with some kind of a sandy liquid, or perhaps they just don't clean their mop. Oh, and the bed is also sandy too! I don't really think it is an excuse that it is because they are beside the beach. I've been to a lot of beach front resorts and the bed is not as sandy as this hotel's.
As for service, well, the reception people needs some improving because each one tells you a different thing. One says their shuttle is free, another says it's not. It's very confusing (in the end, their shuttle is actually free and they better be because the hotel is located in an isolated area, far away from the shops and city center). And relatively, for a Filipino hotel, the front desk staff is below average in their warmth and hospitality. The security guards are more courteous and warm though.
Ok, ok, let me give some other good points - there's free wifi on the lobby/reception area and complimentary instant coffee, tea and water there too (nothing in the room). They also have a swimming pool. Also, there would be a sunrise view which is nice and also at night when lots of stars shine brightly in the sky. During low tide, the beach recedes to about 300 meters and it is an opportunity to walk around the shore and find interesting sea species like Starfishes, sea urchine, sea cucumber, etc.
To conclude - this hotel is NOT a good place for honeymooners and for people looking to have a relaxing and quiet accomodation, it is more catered to groups of young people on a group outing/team building.
