Metropolis, the May 07, 2008
Metropolis, located on the banks of the Ohio River, at the southernmost tip of Illinois has played key roles in America's history. It is believed that Native Americans originally populated this area, taking advantage of its natural benefits.
Early on, about 1802 a Fort was built here by the French, and it has protected them, the English and American troops on the edge of the river. Fort Massac once was a thriving guard post here and has been replicated at its original site. And Fort Massac State Park, the first state park in Illinois sits along the same part of the river offering wonderful views of the Ohio River and majestic nature of the Shawnee National Forrest.
In 1839 the town of Metropolis was drawn out in an area about a mile west of the fort grounds. The site picked because it was high above the river, with the hope that it would become a major transportation hub.
On January 21, 1972 DC Comics declared Metropolis "Hometown of Superman", and in June of that year the Illinois State Legislature passed Resolution 572 that declared Metropolis the "Hometown of Superman," the comic book superhero who is based in the fictional city of Metropolis. Among the ways it celebrates is an annual Superman Celebration that is always held the second weekend in June.
The 15 to 20 foot statue of America’s Super Hero stands right in the middle of Superman Square, which is also where the courthouse is located. And at some point along the last year someone asked if they had the “Daily Planet” newspaper, and they do not. It is called the “Metropolis Planet”.
And just for you really questioning folks, there is even a road called "Lois Lane"!
Just across Main Street from the square is the Superman Museum. This is a great place for comic book collectors and Superman buffs to visit.
