Meteora (Suspended Rocks)
Meteora (Suspended Rocks) Kalambaka Reviews
The Rock Towers with Clifftop Wonders Jul 24, 2010
Meteora, (Greek word for 'suspended rocks') is another wonder situated at the rugged terrain of Kalambaka, Thessaly. The geological formation of rock mountains rising from the ground beget a unique and spectacular look. The high rock pillars proudly stand in different shapes and various altitudes. This conglomerate is indeed a natural work of art that resembles a rare natural monument and perfect paradigm of a living sculpture.
Meteora however, is not just a mass of rock columns but also those dignified monasteries built atop these tall towers. (These monasteries were used by monks to protect themselves from the Turks. The monks then used net hitched by a hook to ascend and descend the cliff top). Upon reaching the top, one can't help but wonder how did the monks in the past manage to access these monasteries considering that height and the way they did it. But needless to say, the panoramic view on top is simply breathtaking, truly amazing, really impressing!!!
With the passage of time, the access to these monasteries had changed dramatically. Steps were made by cutting on the rocks leading the way to the top.
Speaking of monasteries, six of them are still in stable condition. Some were turned into museum due to the vast collection of tremendous and well preserved frescoes. But not all are open all days, for the monks to have a full privacy for praying and performing sacred works. So it is advisable to inquire beforehand, if planning to visit a particular monastery.
The place is well visited not only by the tourists, but by the pilgrims as well. Anyhow, whatever reason it maybe, Meteora has something to offer. Aside from the natural aspect, it constitutes a cultural legacy and religious aspiration that leaves deep impact on the minds of everyone visiting the place. No wonder, UNESCO characterized Meteora as a monument of humanity and a unique example of monastic life.
