Between 1-2 hours past Las Vegas is the city of Mesquite, Nevada. It is like an oasis in the middle of the desert; there is no feeling of real civilization anywhere around. There are a few decent sized resort/casinos in Mesquite, which are nice and mostly frequented by people of retirement age.
