Between 1-2 hours past Las Vegas is the city of Mesquite, Nevada. It is like an oasis in the middle of the desert; there is no feeling of real civilization anywhere around. There are a few decent sized resort/casinos in Mesquite, which are nice and mostly frequented by people of retirement age.
Golfing is very popular here, and the golf courses are well maintained despite the intense heat that seems to linger on throughout most of the year.
