Mesa Verde National Park Overview

Mesa Verde is an expansive national park in southwest Colorado. The greater area, inclusive of the Canyon of the Ancients, has one of the oldest standing human settlements in North America.

There are several sites of various size, but the most notable are the larger Cliff Palace and Balcony House, were you are still able to go down (with park ranger guide) and view the Ancestral Puebloan's hidden cities. They were build inside the natural cavities of the cliffs for a number of reasons - to save the flat plateau for agricultural harvesting, to provide protection from both weather and enemies, to be closer to the natural ground water springs. But all were left abandoned. There are many theories, but not are proven yet.
