Mermaid Parade Brooklyn Reviews
Jun 28, 2007
Every year in June Coney Island has the largest art parade in the United States, besides Mardi Gras, called the Mermaid Parade. Everything in this parade is Aquatic themed so everybody participating in the parade dresses up in hand made costumes with something that has to do with water. It can be anything from seamen (both types), sea monkeys, aqua teen hunger force, mermaids and mermaities, as well as King Neptune. The parade will astound you with how creative people are. And the best part is eating the Nathan's hot dogs while you are there!
A little history about the parade it was founded in 1983 by Coney Island USA, a not-for-profit arts organization. The Mermaid Parade pays homage to Coney Island's forgotten Mardi Gras which lasted from 1903 to 1954, and draws from a host of other sources resulting in a wonderful and wacky event that is unique to Coney Island.
The Parade is followed by the Mermaid Parade Ball, a post-parade gathering where costumed parade participants can get together with each other and parade spectators to listen to live music, purchase raffle tickets, and watch burlesque and sideshow acts performed by some of New York City's hottest burlesque stars.
It definitely is a trip and if you are in Coney island at the end of June go check it out...you will have a blast!!!
