When in Merida, Mexico. I highly recommend that you take a plantation tour. It was not high on my list but I am so glad I did it.
About 100 years ago, Merida was one of the wealthiest cities in the world with more millionaires than anywhere else. These plantation owners came from Spain and started planting sisal to make rope - hence it was called the rope city of the world.
Before nylon, these ropes were needed by just about everyone. The famous Mexican hammock used to be made from this material as well and the locals lament that the modern hammock (made from nylon) are hot and not as comfortable.
Even though many of these plantations fell into neglect after the sisal industry crashed (after nylon and other synthetics were invented), the plantation tour gives a window into Merida's glorious past which provide you with a better understanding and appreciation of the colonial architecture throughout the city.
