OK - Small Rooms, Not Great Service Nov 03, 2010
Stayed 2 nights at this modern chain hotel in the spring. It is located in central Ouarzazate and is easy to find. It overlooks Kasbah Taourirt (which looks nice when lit up by floodlights after dark) right across the street, and the Atlas Mtns in the distance too. It also has a real-sized pool on a contemporary styled, 2nd floor deck. There are good views from there too. The whole hotel was clean. There was plenty of parking; most of it in the shade. There's the positives mostly.
Unfortunately, this Mercure doesn't really have any character compared with the many riads or smaller guesthouses around southern Morocco. It's chain hotel. The rooms were very small without any ambience and barely enough room to walk around the bed or put belongings. King bed in the room. The TV worked OK. The bathroom was modern and clean and had hot water with good pressure. The room's "balcony" was actually just a door that opened with a railing in front of it. Not even enough room for 1 person to fully stand on.
Being avid tennis players, the wife & I grabbed our racquets and headed out to the hotel's court, hoping to bang some balls around, but the court was an absolute mess. It looked like the target area of an artillery range. It was hard-packed dirt with all kinds of pits and divots, like a herd of camels hopped across it on pogo sticks. The net was ripped up pretty badly too...Totally unplayable, sadly.
The restaurant was OK but the food & service was nothing special for dinner. Breakfast was a buffet, but it can be taken outside, where the nice view was. We had dinner at a outside, small local restaurant our 2nd night and enjoyed it more. We had some drinks at the hip-feeling hotel bar with fireplace, but they played the same set of music the whole time...Same mix of English pop/ easy rock numbers that looped every 4 hours or so, all...day...long.
Moroccan music would have been a better choice.
For the price we paid, we could have been in a warm, Moroccan styled, authentic riad with much more personable staff, architecture and service. Instead, we made the mistake of staying here.
While it was clean, safe feeling and mostly functional, I would stay in a smaller, more authentic riad next time I was in the area. It is okay as a rest point between the desert and Marrakech, but you wouldn't want to spend more than a night or two here.
The Mercure wasn't really "bad" overall, but it was nothing special either.
