Mercure Hotel Muenchen Schwabing Munich Reviews
Good hotel with U-Bahn access to Oktoberfest Sep 19, 2010
The Mercure Hotel München had availability during the 200th Anniversary of Oktoberfest on Bookings.com and was close to the Münchener Freiheit U-Bahn metro stop, just 6 stops from the Theresienwiese U-Bahn station where the Oktoberfest Wiesn is located.
The hotel has 65 rooms which vary in size. Be sure to ask for a street view if you do not mind the tram noise--or the beer garden side is actually better for noise and keeping the windows open at night. we spoke to another couple staying at this hotel from Hamburg, and they told us that the back side was "super quiet."
This Mercure Hotel in Munich has a glass entrance way leading to an orange-colored reception desk. The staff is very helpful and has a good mastery of English. There is a lounge with a brand new bar to the left of reception and a lounge with free internet access (including a printer to print any tickets online) to the right.
There is a Korean "Seoul" Restaurant and beer garden behind the hotel in an enclosed courtyard. The hotel has underground parking garage, but it seemed pretty expensive to park overnight.
There are several good (mostly Italian) restaurants nearby, several outdoor cafes, and some shopping. There is a street tram directly in front of the hotel which can take you the 2 city blocks to the Münchener Freiheit U-Bahn stop if you do not want to walk. The neighborhood seems safe, even at night, and there are several pubs in the local area. there is also an area with descent night-life nearby.
The rooms were modernized version of late 60's retro orange and maroon color schemes with reasonably comfortable beds. Each room has a mini-bar and small TV with a desk. The closets were large but did not have a chest of drawers.
The place was very clean and the bathrooms were a bit on the small side for this type of 3-star city hotel. It did have a small but very deep bath tub/shower combo.
+ Location, location, location
+ Access to public mass transit
+ Rooms available during Oktoberfest 2010
+ New bar with everything from beer/wine to long drinks
+ Internet access and computer in lobby with printer
+ Modern lounge area and beer garden
+ Friendly and helpful staff
+ Air Conditioning A/C Heat to keep windows closed and drown out street/tram noise
+ Breakfast bar area
+ Wi-Fi in the rooms
- Noisy elevator between floors 1 and 2
- Noisy shoe-shine machine right outside our door
- Street noise from the tram and 0700 Monday AM glass recyclable collection (but can be drowned out with A/C on and windows closed)
- The bar was so new that there were no prices for many items (like standard house wine or Jack Daniels) but we "made it work" with the helpful and friendly staff.
A friend of ours said that he has also stayed at this same hotel and liked it very much.
Overall, we liked this hotel for the convenience of the location and the availability at a reasonable price during the busiest time of the year in Munich. We would stay here again for a future Oktoberfest for sure and would consider it for other trips to this historic city!
