Mercersburg Inn Reviews
B&B done right Mar 07, 2011
Although ski conditions weren't up to par(no fault of the Mercersburg Inn)my short stay at the Inn made the trip well worth it. After 16 hours of continuous driving, the inn was a welcome respite. I can't speak for all b&b's but from my personal experience they often come up short for the price. Much of the decor at b&b's is either just a little too lacy or cutesy for my tastes and a lack of real style is made up for with too much wallpaper, tacky tchotchke and uncomfortable furnishings.
None of this can be said for the Mercersburg. The home is an immaculate 3 story mansion built in 1909. Even if the period of decor is not to your liking it would be hard to imagine being dissatisfied. The attention to detail in the construction and maintenance of the home is apparent everywhere you look, inside and out. I missed dinner but enjoyed the breakfast immensely. Fresh fruit, tri-berry muffins and although I'm not usually into quiche, theirs was perfectly cooked. Firm but moist and with a perfect crust. Fresh squeezed o.j. and endless coffee.
The owners, Lisa and Jim McCoy and their staff were accommodating and attentive without being intrusive and were professional yet not stuffy. For people who would believe they might feel out of place in such luxurious environs I'll say I got the impression that all walks are welcome, assuming you're polite and respectful.
Additionally, if you're going to ski Whitetail and you're trying to be frugal by staying at a chain in Hagerstown you'd be wise to continue on to Mercersburg. For $30-$40 more per night in one of their smaller rooms, you can have a far more memorable stay in a far more comfortable room 30 minutes closer to the slopes and save on your lift tickets as they have a partnership with Whitetail and have discounted ski/snowboard packages. Not to mention crime is much lower in the area than in an overpriced box down by the freeway. I hope to have the chance to stay with them again.
