good plalce to spend an hour-ish Mar 03, 2009
Well the park is really great. from mid summer on you can see bears about every 5 or 10 min at the salmon spawning stream. The Bear viewing area is elevated from the stream so you are safe. There are also many park rangers around answering questions. they usually take a chunk of the glacier and set it out on a table so you can go touch it.

there is a short nature walk, its 1/3 of a mile long loop and paved.

I could see spending an hour to two hours here. they charge you $3 to get into the viewing area which isnt worth it unless its raining.

DO NOT take the city buss unless you want to walk 3 miles to get to the glacier and back. I realize that 3 miles is not that far - but you are also going to want to hike all around the park. there are many privetly owned shuttle busses you could take - I took a white school bus for $14 round trip. it runs every half an hour all day long.

Mendenhall Glacier heli-hiking Nov 03, 2009
Ok... if you're going to Alaska, you simply have to splurge and go heli-hiking. The views, helicopter flight and hiking were unbelievable.

Important: The comments express are mine and in no way intended to promote any product, service or tour. Also, I’m not here to write full ‘play by play’ reports on my experience simply to provide short first hand personal impression. As with all comments, reviews, recommendations on the internet, in books or magazines, they are SUBJECTIVE! We all have individual likes and dislikes and it is your responsibility to perform your own ‘due diligence’ and make educated choices. The bottom line… we live on an amazing planet and I’ve been fortunate enough to have explored a large piece of it. My only suggestion would be to get out there and enjoy every bit of it whenever you’re able.

Glacier in the heart of Juneau! Jul 07, 2008
Imagine a glacier, pretty much located in the middle of town, between the tourist / cruise ship area and the more residential area headed to Auke Bay. Mendenhall Glacier, which is located 13 miles from downtown, was named after Thomas Corwin Mendenhall who was a Superintendent of the US Coast and Geodetic Survey from 1889 to 1894. John Muir had first named the glacier, Auke Glacier in 1879, after the Aak'w Kwaan of the Tlingit Indians but was renamed to honor Mendenhall in 1892.

The glacier is visible on the drive between downtown and Auke Bay although you can go to the visitor center and take tours landing on the glacier itself....even dog sledding opportunities!

Mendenhall Glacier is 100 feet tall at the face, and about 1.5 miles wide, with a length of over 6 miles! It is a small portion of the Juneau icefield, the interconnected glaciers that sit behind the mountains, adjacent to Juneau.

Some of the tours offered include ground tours to the walk up visitors' center. Flightseeing companies offer aerial tours, and helicopter companies can land on the glacier for a short walk ot a multi hour hike!

The Mendenall Glacier Visitor Center is open May through September: Sunday - Saturday from 8am - 7:30pm and is $3. From October to April, 10am - 4pm, Thurs - Sun, free admission. Don't worry if you are without a car while in Juneau - there are options through tour companies, taxi, rental car, or city bus.

While on our cruise, we stopped in towns, and would do a little sightseeiing trip. The Mendenhall Glacier was one of them. You were able to walk down, and see it from across the river.
