Not what I expected Apr 12, 2011
Doesn't look at all like it does in the photos. The water is horribly dirty and there really isn't anything to see. This place isn't taken care of like the other beautiful gardens in Marrakech.

Desert oasis Oct 08, 2005
If memory serves, the gardens were 'constructed' in the twelth century, and still stand as a testiment to old Moroccan architecture. The Menara gardens are a series of small gardens and olive groves surrounding an oasis that was dug out during the original construction of the site. It has been used for irrigation purposes to help supply Marrakech with water, as well as being a previous summer home for a famous Sultan of the 16th century.

The key things to see are the vibrant colours of the olive blooms in spring. The pavilion is a beautiful example of Moroccan architecture, which offers a decent view of the gardens and the surrounding areas. For those traveling at the right time of year (and on a clear day) it is even possible to see the Atlas mountain's snow covered peaks in the background behind the pavilion!

For a relativly short journey and the freedom of entry to explore the gardens it is well worth spending an hour or two at if you are passing or staying Marrakech. Personally I found it an inspirational place to take some sketches, and maybe even write a passage or two under the shade of palms trees while a cool desert wind blows softly against you.
