The old Memphis ! Apr 06, 2010
Memphis is the Greek version of one of the many names the
Ancient Egyptians used to denote the city that lay on the border between Upper- and Lower-Egypt.
The city of Memphis was one of the largest and most important cities in its day. Some archaeologists think that as many as 100,000 people may have lived in it at the height of its power, which lasted for almost one thousand years during the Old Kingdom period.
During this time, the pharaohs erected monuments to themselves, starting at a site just to the west of Memphis.
