Melk is only about 1,5 hours from Vienna and is home to the Benedictine Monastry.The monastery of Melk is definitely a place to visit. It is definitely over the top baroque. Just south of Melk is the Schallaburg Castle. The castle is 16th century Renaissance and is still beautifully preserved. You can get a combination ticket to view both the monastary and the castle.

We were tired of driving, but still had a long way to go to our next destination. I saw a road sign for Melk, and I'd heard that the Melk Abbey was amazing, so we decided to go check it out. This is what's nice about a flexible itinerary. Melk turned out to be a wonderful place.

We took the train from Vienna to Melk where Michele wanted to see the Abbey. We stowed our bags in the lockers in the train station and wandered down the hill to the town. We were each given an Easter Egg when we passed through the Pedestrain Zone (remember Easter was coming this weekend). We worked our way up to the Abbey. Melk was to be our last, most western, stop
