We were tired of driving, but still had a long way to go to our next destination. I saw a road sign for Melk, and I'd heard that the Melk Abbey was amazing, so we decided to go check it out. This is what's nice about a flexible itinerary. Melk turned out to be a wonderful place.

We took the train from Vienna to Melk where Michele wanted to see the Abbey. We stowed our bags in the lockers in the train station and wandered down the hill to the town. We were each given an Easter Egg when we passed through the Pedestrain Zone (remember Easter was coming this weekend). We worked our way up to the Abbey. We were under the impresison that you could only take and English guided tour today at 11 am or 2 pm, since it was the off season. We got the...

My first time in Austria in the summer :D. I knew Austria was beautiful in winter-time, but I liked the green version too!

Melk was to be our last, most western, stop
along the valley. Melk (nothing to do with Milk), unlike the previous towns, is
on the southern bank of the Danube. Its distinguishing feature is the ginormous Melk Monastery (Stifft
Melk). This is actually a number of huge buildings as well as an enormous
surrounding garden area. The monastery is several hundred years, dating back to the 900's. However the
manificent baroque church and monastery that are currently standing are from the 1700’...

Austria is the most beautiful and historical country I've been in. When we went in the spring of 2006, we visited Steyr, Vienna, and Salzburg, The Lake District, Melk and other various little Skiing villages. The buildings were soo beautiful and different from what I was use to seeing, it made going back home to Canada a chore.

Our bike trip continues, and although the Austrian countryside is very
nice, it's been pretty slow going. Yesterday we biked from Linz to the
town of Grein. When we set off, it was raining, but we pulled on our
raincoats and forged ahead. Along the route, we took a diversion a few
kilometres up a hill to visit the site of the old Mauthausen
concentration camp. The camp was up a steep hill (so steep we just hid
our bikes at the side of the road and walked up) in a great spot, with
a won...

I went with the University of South Carolina to perform Mozart’s Requiem throughout Austria and Hungary in Summer 2007. I got some good friends, good memories, and good pictures out of the deal. Good times!
