Melekeok State, on the big island of Babeldaob, officially became the Capital of Palau since October 1, 2006. In this state the Presidential Office, National Congress and Supreme Court are established in a new complex of huge buildings laid out in the middle of an amazing green tropical forest.
It is surprising to see in this island environment that the new Palau National Capitol buildings closely resemble classical Greek/Roman architecture in style. It looks like a little bit of Washington, DC USA just appeared in the middle of Palau's jungle!
One of the best attractions for local surfers in Palau is in Melekeok State. The ocean offers best waves for surfing and body boarding. Surfing in Palau is a well kept secret, but is quite good at the right times of year.
