The most cosmopolitan city in Australia Nov 09, 2010
Don't let anybody tell you Sydney is the epitomy of Australian culture. I'm not saying Sydney's not fab if you're a tourist with limited time and want Oz in a nutshell, but for a real multicultural, and let's face it, just cultural, vibrant, non-touristy, relaxed yet buzzing Australian experience, Melbourne's where it's at.

The CBD is a gridded mix of wide shopping streets full of amazing restaurants and eclectic shops, and tiny alleys packed full of bohemian boutiques and coffee shops. The South Bank of the river has even more great restaurants and a lively arty/crafty market on Sundays, plus a mall with more interesting shops than you usually find in Aussie towns. Look out for rowers on the Yarra river at the weekend, plus joggers crossing the many bridges that span the river and give access to various pedestrian walkways around the area, my favourite of which is the William Barak bridge which has a unique sound installation embedded into it so that as you walk across you hear aboriginal songs, sounds and commentary which change as you progress. (

Don't miss out on a tram ride, there's a circular route that takes you right round the CBD and is well worth the trip. Other unmissable sights include Flinders Street Station, Federation Square and the Queen Victoria Market ( Favourite restaurants - the Curry Vault, off Collins St ( a tiny place called Red Pepper - the only decent curries I've found in Australia have been in Melbourne.
