A bit more sedate, and a chance to chill
posted by:

An interesting start to the day. Went up to Casa Voyageurs station to wait on train coming in from Marrakech, and it was running 45 minutes late. There were loads of soldiers waiting at one end of the platform, and as the train pulled in the front half of train was clear for soldiers to bo…

Morocco 2007: Meknes Travel Photos
posted by:
Mar 04, 2007 – Mar 10, 2007
For as long as I can remember I have had the insatiable desire to visit Morocco. I never understood why, so I was determined to visit the country to see if I could discover the answer. This was my 2nd trip to Africa in less than a year. Both trips were with the same friend. I knew this was going to be an incredible experience, but it definitely exceeded my expectations, despite becoming addicted to Moroccan mint tea!

Morocco, June 2008: Meknes Travel Photos

Morocco is either the kind of place you're going to love or hate. I loved it! Loved the culture and the people are very friendly, sometimes too friendly so I suggest females should travel here with a male. Meknes is beautiful and perfect for a day trip away from fez. Fez is a quiet town, perfect for couples but limit your stay to around 3-4 nights. Marrakech Medina is vibrant and lively with a host of great markets, restuarants and bars.

Ancient city of Meknes

The day was very eventful and long today....very enjoyable though. Imaginative traveller says: Meknes is the perfect place to get lost in a traditional souq (market) where you'll find activity at every turn from local saw-millers to tentmakers sewing up sacks and colourful canvas; men selling fine…

0218. A Truly Royal Moroccan City (Mor 066--revisit)
posted by:
Jul 13, 2008 – Dec 29, 2008
Meknes is one of the "Royal Cities" of Morocco, because it was the capital of Morocco during a period of its history and it definitely lives up to that title.  In fact, it might actually be the most "royal" of all the Royal Cities!  I came here to see some friends back in 97 but never rea…

Meknes to Fes

We left Fes early in the morning after breakfast to continue on our journey to Chefchaouen.  We made a stop at Volubilis where Mustafa took us on a guided tour of the ruins. The ruins of Volubilis are said to be some of the best preserved Roman remains in the world and a UNESCO World Her…

We actually arrived in Meknes Friday evening. After a quick freshening up at the hotel we were packed into the "kidnap" van and taken to a lovely terraced restaurant in the medina. There we were served by the crazy and amusing Salim, who took a liking to Carolyn's eyes, hence calling her Fatima; an…

Another Imperial City
posted by:
Feb 10, 2007 – Apr 16, 2007
From Fes, I made a day trip to another Imperial City called Meknes.  I didn't take too much interest in Meknes (more of the same) but spent some time at the Roman ruins in Voulibilis and at the little hillside town Moulay Idris (which is home to Moulay Idris' mausoleum).

We got up a little later than the days before, since it was only a short ride from Fes to Meknes. But first we went to visit the excavations of Volubilis, a Roman settlement; it's name means changing, unpredictable, named like that because of the ever changing sand dunes. So far only 1/3 is excavat…
