Mei Zhou Dong Po Beijing Reviews
Variety of exceptional SiChuan dishes Aug 03, 2011
We went to this restaurant, Mei Zhou Dong Po, for my grandma's 80th birthday celebration. She suggested it, out of several choices, because she heard from her friends that it was a great place for SiChuan food that's not too expensive. We had booked a private section in advance.
The restaurant, held on the 4th floor of a building with several restaurants in HaiDian, held many small tables in the center section, and private "rooms" around them. They're not really rooms as they don't actually have doors, but are sealed enough from the rest of the restaurant that it's not noisy, yet allows the waitstaff to come in and out easily. The restaurant was also well decorated, with art on the walls, as well as fancy curtains.
The menu was huge, and had many pages. It was one of those menus where they put 3 or 4 items to a page, with pictures of each dish.
After looking at the menu for what seems like forever, we ordered several large dishes, and a few smaller side dishes/appetizers. Since it is a SiChuan restaurant, there were many choices for spicy food, which we're all pretty used to.
We ordered squirrel fish, a SuZhou dish, which is fish cooked in sweet and spicy sauce, arranged to look like a flying squirrel. Another main dish is bullfrog cooked with different kinds of peppers. Others include beef with peanuts, shredded pork with peppers, green mustard plant, mashed potato (Chinese version), etc. They were all exceptional.
The dishes are pretty expensive, with a main dish costing up to 80 yuan, and side dishes up to 40.
The service wasn't great; the staff was very busy, we could hardly get a hold of our waitress. When we decided to change a main dish to another one, pretty much right after we ordered, we couldn't flag her, we had to go to her waitress station to get it changed.
Also, when the bill came, she added the original dish along with the dish we ended up getting, so we had to get her again to get that taken off.
Overall, the food was good yet pricey, and the service could have been much better.
