The great pyramids of Giza, the pink facades of Petra, the blue minarets of Istanbul, and the storybook walled cities of Jerusalem and Damascus are some of the highlights that lure travelers to the Middle East. If you make it to these postcard spots, you won’t go home disappointed. But there is a hole-in-the-wall restaurant in Jerusalem called Rahmo, where they serve the best kubbe soup this side of an Iraqi or Kurdish grandmother’s kitchen. And deep in the Western Desert, between the oasi…

Our third and final day in Jerusalem fell on a Sabbath. Beginning the night before at dusk, the Sabbath runs all Saturday morning and afternoon, ending at dusk. Fortunately in Jerusalem, only the Jewish section of the city shuts down. Taxis are still running, and the museums were still open. We were unsure about this at first, but once we knew the Israel Museum was open, we headed straight there via taxi. The highlight of the Israel Museum are the famous Dead Sea…

The City of David Tour was one of our last stops. There was a movie. Historical information about the grounds on which were stood was given. There was some water demonstration about the sewage system. The big event was the trek through Hezekiah’s tunnel. The tunnel is, unsurprisingly, long and dark. Water runs through it still. And once you enter, you must follow through to the end. Our experience of the tunnel was, to me, heartbreaking because my friend’s then youngest daughter, aged 5, …

Jerusalem is the capital of Israel and its largest city. Located in the Judean Mountains, between the Mediterranean Sea and the northern tip of the Dead Sea, New Jerusalem or New City has grown up outside the Old City.
The Old City is home to several sites of key religious importance: the Temple Mount and its Western Wall for Jews, the Church of the Holy Sepulchre for Christians, and the Dome of the Rock and al-Aqsa Mosque for Muslims.
The Old City is divided into four quarters, the Mu…

The Old City is a 0.9 square kilometre (0.35 square mile) area within the modern city of Jerusalem. Until the 1860s this area constituted the entire city of Jerusalem. The Old City is home to several sites of key religious importance: the Temple Mount and its Western Wall for Jews, the Church of the Holy Sepulchre for Christians, and the Dome of the Rock and al-Aqsa Mosque for Muslims.Traditionally, the Old City has been divided into four quarters, although the current designations were…

I would love to live in a city where I could spend my Saturday afternoons walking the local market for fresh veggies and fruits. The atmosphere was intoxicating! Venders with operatic voices calling out to the public the specials of the hour, little old men and women slowly wandering the aisle in search of the freshest bread, tourists standing in everyone's way lost in the sights and sounds of the moment, birds flying just above out heads, the colors of candied fruits and toasted nuts, dodgin…

Shalom Everyone,
SO it is 5pm here in Jerusalem, and I am reading and sending my last emails from Israel before I begin the journey back.
A group of Christian pilgrams just passed outside the internet cafe and gave some chants or something at the 8th station of the cross, just outside. And all my neighbours here at adjacent computers are speaking in Arabic.
I've learned a few things from the trip here, many of which I think I will need much time to digest. In all, this experience has been…

Jerusalem is every bit as spectacular as you might imagine. Much of the city is completely unchanged since the days when Christ walked down those very same passages and through the city gates. From following in Christs last footsteps to seeing the Western Wailing Wall which holds such significance for Jewish people. It was spectacular to see the Gardens of Gethsemane and see the view Jesus would have had of the entire city while he thought of what was ahead of him. Wonderfully historic city w…

Some of you may have heard of the Hezbollah crisis: I was there in the midst! Many people hear about the turmoil in Israel, however, most people rarely hear of the hospitality of the people or of their amazing generosity. I experienced the Hezbollah crisis as well as the turmoil between the Arabs and the Jews as I traveled through uncharted territory and heard the story from the people who live it out on a daily basis. It is something that will forever be etched upon my mind.

I'm a grad student in conflict resolution, and for school, I attended a UN conference on conflict resolution and negotiation techniques. Afterward, a delegation of us students went on a goodwill peacekeeping tour of Israel/Palestine in order to put some of these new skills to practice.

I have been abroad for almost a month now and I'm ready to go home. I'm tired. I miss my husband, my dogs, my own bed, my own shower. Tonight I fly back home and even though I hate flying, I'm actually looking forward to the 12 1/2 hour flight from Tel Aviv to Atlanta because it means I'll be one step closer to home.
We do have a full day of activities before departure though. First a lecture (that's filmed for an upcoming documentary) from a woman who reported…
