Me Mates Villa Phnom Penh Reviews
Nice place to stay! Nov 29, 2014
Located near some of the attractions in Phnom Penh, the Me Mates Villa (also called Me Mates Place) is a nice hostel to stay at, in a good location.
Not easy to find, as there is not much in terms of signage. I was only able to find it, because the tuk-tuk driver knew where it was. The place is down a driveway, to the hostel building itself.
Reception is a small desk, in the same place as a dorm room, and the bar as well. The staff are really nice and helpful, and could be interesting to have conversations with. They can also arrange to have tuk-tuks to take you to some of the attractions around the city, like the Khmer Rouge sites. Though this could be hit or miss, depending on the driver.
The rooms are nice, even if it is kind of cramped. The bunk beds are lined in a row, and they do feel okay. And the lighting is not too good. But it does have an air-conditioner that could be turned on and off at any time with a remote. That in itself, is a major bonus for me, and makes it worth staying.
There are 2 bathroom facilities, one with a toilet only, and the other having a shower. They are okay. And you are provided with lockers and your own lock with key, so you can safely store your luggage in them. I don’t think it has a kitchen of its own. And there is a pool table outside of the reception area.
The hostel is walking distance to the Royal Palace, and the National Museum of Cambodia. About 5 minutes away. So I think the location is really good. And it is about a 40 to 50 minute walk from S-21 and the Russian Market.
But there is one thing that I have to mention, and that is, don’t use the computer in the reception area, because it is unprotected and slow, for anything that requires a personal password. Only if you need to find some general information on something. Also, DON'T CONNECT YOUR CAMERA TO IT, because it will somehow delete your photos. Not sure how or why it does that. Instead, if you need to check e-mail, Facebook, or TravBuddy, you can use the free WiFi on your personal portable device for that.
Other than that, I really liked this place, and think it is definitely a place worth staying at. I would stay there again.
