Horrible Attack! Jul 24, 2009

We are American residents in Tanzania. We had reservation for 3 nights at Mbuyuni Beach village from July 16-19 2009. We stayed one night and the accommodations were horrible: bad beds, dirty bathroom, toilet didn't flush, fridge didn't work, and the beach is very rocky which is unsafe for anyone to swim. But the worse is that after we canceled and decided to walk down the beach to a better hotel at 9:30 am, we were violently attacked by two men with machetes. One put his machetes to my wife's neck and the other to my face in front of our 5 year old son! They took everything we had including our passports, money, and valuables mounting to almost $2000!! But worse is that we felt that our lives were threatened and that had we resisted we could have been hurt. I went to the police and there is a full investigation about Mbuyuni's management involvement. We can't prove they set us up, BUT THEY WERE THE ONLY ONES WHO KNEW WE WERE ON THE BEACH!! I went back to the hotel with an inspector and a local and we all felt that the manager Mowsa knew about it and was involved. This is a scam hotel don't ever go there they deserve to go out of business.

On behalf of Mbuyuni Beach Village, we would like to respond the above review from the clients who stayed with us. Is better when the guests know the 2 sides of the story. After Mr. David Matthews stayed with us for 1 night, him and his family decided that our hotel was not for them and they checked out the following morning to go to another hotel, to Paje village. Then unfortunately on their way to Paje, about 2 miles away from our place, they got attacked (away from our place) and strangely they keep accusing us of getting involved with attack, which is not true at all. We know how upset they must have been, but we feel like they are looking for someone to blame. As far as we know the attack happen at 9:30 am and they came back to us at 1:00pm with the complaints. If this thing happened close to our hotel other guests who were staying with us at that time would have seen this, but no one witnessed this as it happened 2 miles away from our place, so it could be anyone, especial as Zanzibar beach is not a private beach, it is a public beach which is used by anyone at anytime. The police have done the full investigation and no one from our hotel was involved in this. Like any other hotel owners, we are against the attack and theft on tourists at all time. That's why we have 24 hours security at our hotel but we can not be held responsible for any attack that take place miles away from our place.

We were loking for a quiet ,relaxing place after Safari and what we found was ok,bungalows are simple but well decorated and queit comfortable bathroom.
the hotel is relatively smaller compared to other resorts we saw on the coast.
The staff go out of their way to make our stay as comfortable as possible.
Though this is not five stars resorts by conventional standards.
We would not hesitate to recommend this place for those looking for a perfect cheap spot for relaxing and enjoying in Zanzibar.

We were realy put off booking this place based on previous reviews but fortunately We went with our instincts and gave it a try.
Mbuyuni provided the most perfect holiday for us as a couple of thirty something.
there is a feeling of being completely remote ,the peace and silence.
the food and services was great ,but do not expect extensive menus here.
It is romantic heaven for those in love, agood holiday place for the families or a peaceful retreat for those wanting to be alone.
Do not go there ,if you want a night life.

While We were In Zanzibar for x-mass 07,me and my two friends stayed at Mbuyuni Beach Village on the east coast of Zanzibar at Jambiani.
We did not book rooms in advance but fortunetly when we got there they had a triple bungalow available,Which cost us$55 per night with breakfast,We took the bungalow for 4 nights,The bathroom was very clean and the bedroom was big.
Their bungalows are self contained with toilet/shower
We real enjoyed our time at this place.
They also have sea-facing restaurant that serves Lunch,Dinner for reasonable price but their menu mainly is sea food.
This is great place for those who are looking for quiet hoilday as the location is very quiet one.
Please make sure you stay in the hotel area after 7:00pm as it gets real dark and staff told us that is not safe to walk along the beach at night time.
But during our stay We did not have to go any where at night time as the staff used to make a big bon-fire on the beach every night after our dinner.
