It is often compared to the grand canyon because of it's perfect cone shape. It is truly one the pride of Southern Philippines. I went to this place like a decade ago and gone a 10 hour land travel but it was truly worth travelling. There is also a place called irosin near the volcano which is a hot spring, another nice spot to drop by and spend the day when you visit this place.

Mayon the Magayon Volcano Mar 15, 2011
Having spent my childhood in Philippines i would often visit my relatives who reside in this lovely town, now city named Bicol. Having not seen it for over 19 yrs i was blown away just to see the slightest figure of it from the air still miles away. As the plane flew closer and closer my jaw just fell lower and lower (clch*). It really is Magayon ('Magayon' means 'beautiful' in Bicolano dialect which is how it got her name Mayon). If you ever visit bicol i'd recommend you stay here a few days. You just won't get enough of it. The locals say that she changes her mood through out the day. What they mean is the cloud formation, coloration of the Mayon and the sky is always changing from dusk till dawn and it's true.

While there take chance if possible to eat some of the local foods. Bicolanos are quite known for some of their dishes like 'Bicol Express' The main city of Bicol is Legaspi. This is where you'd go if you need to shop for anything stylish. But i'd have to say my favorite city in Bicol is Ligao. A great place if you want to know the culture. Every night at dawn the locals start to gather at town center to socialise and and just kick back. They even sometimes put on a movie or a disco under the night sky. Really quite different from the towns i've been to in Philippines.
