Maxx Hotel Jena Reviews
Good base for trips in the area Jul 14, 2012
We spent 7 nights in this 4 star hotel. Located in an outskirt of Jena. Surrounded by enormous blocks with condo’s. Supposed to be typical for former Eastern Germany. On walking distance (2 minutes) a supermarket and the train station to downtown Jena (in 10 minutes). The hotel is frequented by travel groups. This might be just for the summer holiday season. The location is okay if you have your own transportation.
The hotel has a nice reception area with bar (unfortunately closed on most hours we were in the hotel). The reception staff was very friendly. We mostly needed them on a daily base to get a code to use the free wifi internet (limited to 30 minutes a day) which you can use throughout the hotel, including the rooms.
The restaurant staff was somewhat distant. We had the feeling they were still acting as in former Eastern Germany. Not rude, but friendly is different!
For house guests they have a coupon system. You buy 10 coupons for 20 euros. A coupon is good for a soft drink, a glass of beer, a (small) glass of wine , coffee or tea.
We had breakfast and dinner included. Breakfast (buffet style) was very good. A rich choice of bread, cereals, fruit, yoghurt, cheese, cutlery, eggs etc. Accompanied by coffee, tea and juice.
Dinner in buffet style too. Dinner was just basic. Starter, main course and dessert. A limited choice, but okay.
I spent this week in room 130. This standard room is nicely furnished. I especially liked the bathroom. A spacious shower, separate toilet. Wash basin in the front area. Bathroom provided with a hairdryer, soap and shampoo. Room with a fan and television. Room and bathroom very clean.
Just one problem. This room was located almost above the suppliers entrance of the kitchen. Well, kitchen, they don’t cook in this hotel. The food is delivered from another hotel in the same group. That means breakfast is delivered about 5.00 am. Taking the carts from and to the van is very noisy.
And, we discovered a very nice ‘Biergarten’ (beer garden) just next door. We went there several times for drinks. A large beer (0,5 liter) or a glass of house wine for just 2 euros. Very friendly barmaid. This bar / beer garden is frequented by locals, very friendly too when you visit the bar a couple of times. We felt very welcome!
I have to add one more thing, the hotel offers free public transportation down town Jena during your stay.
