Mausoleum of Moulay Ismail Meknes Reviews
Historic place in Meknes Nov 18, 2010
If you are in Meknes, the mausoleum of Moulay Ismail has to be high on your list of things to do. It is located a good five minute walk away from the medina. If you get lost, just ask one of the locals to point you in the right direction (everyone knows where it is) or just keep a look out for a tour group!
While I was there, I was prevented from going in. However, the façade is really nice to look at. The tile work is similar to a lot of other work from the seventeenth century and the arches are ornately decorated.
The site is important because Moulay Ismail was one of the country’s greatest rulers. Ruling during the
seventeenth century, he made Meknes the capital and this is naturally a fact of great pride to the city. It is also said that visitors to the site are bestowed with a sort of spiritual blessing.
As it is a place that requires great respect, you will be required to take your shoes off. I cannot remember the precise entrance fee, but believe it to be around 10-20 dirhams, which is very cheap.
If you are visiting Meknes, you should give this place serious consideration.
