Awesome sunset, and spectacular stars Mar 04, 2011
We drove up to mauna kea summit at 4 in the afternoon to be sure to see the sunset - not really equipped for temperatures to drop below 32F.. We had to rent a 4 wheel drive to be able to make the climb up the non paved mountain side, and had to stop half way up being very dizzy from the 13k feet ascent.. When we came up there it was supersunny, being over the clouds and seing the observatories was awesome. the sunset was the most amazing thing ive ever seen and it just went on forever in all the colors imaginable. after the sun went down, it became very very cold, i recommend ski jackets and boots for this trip.. Afterwards we drove down the mountain a bit to the visitors centre, where they put out telescopes for visitors to look at the stars and tell about the different planets and stuff.. Being in a totally dark place with no pollution and over the clouds, you can see everything - seriously -everything.. saw the milky way, jupiter and so much more. Its a drive, but was definitely the best hawaii experience ive had in the year of being here, and would recommend this as number 1 experience.

If you want to feel like you're on top of the world, then Mauna Kea is for you. It's a huge observatory that has several telescopes. It is so amazing on top of the mountain, on a new moon the stars are INCREDIBLE!

You have to spend at least 1 hour at the visitors center to acclimatize, and you need a 4X4 vehicle to make it up past the visitors center, or you could go as part of a special tour. However, once you get up to the top, it's soo worth it.
