Matsue Vacation Guide
Matsue is off the beaten track as far as tourist locations in Japan. Located in the Shimane prefecture on the Japan Sea side of Honshu, there is not really much to see in this city of about 140,000. However, it does serve as a pleasant and relaxed contrast to the more well-known bigger cities.
Located between two lakes (Lake Shinji-ko and Lake Nakanoumi), Matsue is situated in a very scenic setting. To arrive via train is also a pleasant journey as you travel through some of the least populated areas of Honshu island.
The main tourist site is the ancient Matsue castle which is one of the last such structures in Japan still preserved in its original state.
Of course, one can also find onsens here and one of the least expensive ones allows you to enjoy a relaxing soak while viewing the beauty of the lakes from the surrounding windows.
