Matriz Square Sep 29, 2013
Matriz Square was a main square on the top of the hill in Alcantara. It featured large church and few important buildings. It was the place where slaves are bought and sold during the time of slavery. Only few buildings on the square are fixed and brought back to usable state while most of the palaces, churches and places in the area are losing their battle against the nature. You can definitely see how grand this city used to be when top of society lived here. There is small museum on one of the corners, well worth visiting. In the middle of the square is pillar where slaves were tied up and punished. It is one of the best preserved pillars in Brazil.
